1636 New England - Radicals break off from the Boston colony and form “Rogue Island” colony.
Anne Hutchinson led a schism among the Massechusetts Bay colonists. She believed in a personal Born Again re-conversion experience. She and her followers went around the colony heckling sermons, of pastors whose faith they doubted. She wanted to restoke the millenarian drive that had founded the colony, and she publically called out hypocrasy. Eventually she was put on trial and banished. In 1637 She founded her New Jerussalem in Radically Tolerant Rhode Island. Rode Island was called “Rogue Island” by the puritans.
The Rhode Island Colony declared full religious toleration in its 1636 foundation and formed a lasting refuge and breeding ground of Radical Experimentation. Calvinist Massachusettes claimed Rhode Island land and tried to conquer it by force of arms. But they were stopped by the English. The island fostered Hutchinson’s Baptists.
Rhode Island also created a refuge for members of the Quaker Movement which had spread virally across Britain in the 1650’s. They began emigrating to New England. The Dutch colony of New Amsterdam eventually declared tolerance in 1663.
In 1684, British America gained a new radically libertarian colony in Philadelphia. Its founder William Penn was a Quaker Aristocrat who turned the Pennsylvania Colony into a radically liberated cultural zone. The colony declared complete toleration did not regulate religion or blasphemy.
The Christian Radical Fringe came streaming from the German lands to found utopian, millenarian alternative communities. Pennselvania became a kind of Burning Man for the Heritics of Europe.
